A floating horse

Floating horse

I sit near a creek, when unexpectedly a somewhat unusual device comes into view: It’s a flotation device, in the shape of a horse.

It follows the downstream movement of the water, gliding gently, its head held high. While being in the water is a natural thing for this type of horse, I don’t think it was meant to float down a creek. Aren’t swimming pools its natural habitat?

Regardless, it makes it way downstream. That is, until it gets stuck on a shallow. And so, I witness a helpless horse, unable to make any further progress, the creek’s current not strong enough to lodge it free.

Seeing this unfold, I imagine there’s a kid further upstream that saw the wind take hold of its horse and blow it into the creek and all they could do is watch it disappear from the scene. A likely scenario for a good cry.

I further imagine, further upstream, there’s an adult out there trying to console the upset child: No worries, we’ll get you another horse

or better:

Let’s go find and rescue your horse

The novelty and playful design of these animal-shaped floats must contribute significantly to their popularity, especially for young children who are drawn to imaginative and entertaining items.

After some hesitation, I end up retrieving it from the water and tie it to a nearby tree. Who knows, perhaps they come for it. Stranger things have happened.

A couple of days later, I happen to return to the scene and notice it gone.

Happy child? Happy adult?
